The annual Sugarplum Festival is always a great time for residents and nonresidents of Blair, Nebraska alike. This fall, once again, Blair’s downtown will become a magical place for all festival attendees!
The Sugarplum Festival kicks off for 2016 on Thursday, November 17, with the traditional lighting of the Christmas lights, the extremely popular Sugarplum Walk, a soup and chili supper, hayrack rides and plenty of activities for the kids at the Blair Public Library. And of course, what would the Sugarplum Festival be without an appearance by the one and only Santa Claus?
The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. on the 17th, with the tree lighting at the City of Blair Offices at 16th and Lincoln Streets. This will also be when the Christmas lights on downtown businesses will be lit for the first time of the season!
Of course, we might be biased, but our absolute favorite event of the Sugarplum Festival is the Sugarplum Walk. It begins right here at Country Gardens Blair Forest. Anyone who wants to walk through the Sugarplum Walk is welcome to come to our florist in Washington County, NE, pick up their bags and visit all of the downtown businesses that are giving out sweets that night. This year we have about 40 businesses in downtown Blair that will be participating. Last year, there were almost 600 bags handed out to local children, so it’s an event that truly gets everyone involved!
Musical entertainment will be provided to everyone taking part in the walk by a brass quartet, which will make its way through the downtown area serenading all the festivalgoers.
Other activities at the Sugarplum Festival
The Sugarplum Walk may be our favorite event of the evening, but it certainly isn’t the only thing going on in Blair that night! If you’re feeling hungry that evening, the soup and chili supper will be served at the Blair Fire Hall, right next to the City of Blair Offices, between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m.
The hayrack rides are completely free, courtesy of Santa’s Woods. The ride takes walkers from S.E. Smith and Sons up to Blair Plaza, where you’ll be able to get even more Sugarplum goodies.
When you’re all done with the walk, head over to the Blair Public Library for additional activities that are fun for the whole family. These activities will be running from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., and include a craft project of cupcake ornaments and plenty of drawings for prizes for kids. There will also be guest readers, apple cider, more goodies and plenty of Christmas music to help you get into the mood for the holiday season.
This is one of the events that truly makes Blair a unique small town, and we can’t wait to play a part in it! Make sure to stop by our florist in Washington County, NE that evening to get your goodie bag and plenty of candies for your kids. We look forward to seeing you and celebrating with you and yours this holiday season!
